“I retired from the public school system and took a job as a teacher in a prison south of town. After a year or two, I became the principal at two prison schools with 500 adult male students. One day a pink school file landed on my desk. I saw Dennis’s name. My heart stopped. I thought, oh no, this can’t be the same person.

“Almost twenty years after he had been a student in my fifth grade class, this young man landed in the prison where I worked, serving a life sentence for the crime of murder.

“Right or wrong, accurate or not, my first thought was that as one of his teachers, I had failed him. Maybe there was something that I should have done or could have done that would have made a difference… Not a day goes by that I don’t wonder about this.” -- Kit Spring
